Services of the Educational and Psychological Guidance Unit\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n
The Educational and Psychological Guidance Unit provides a range of individual and group services with preventive, developmental or remedial aims that help students grow and progress by understanding their circumstances and overcoming the difficulties they face throughout their university years and beyond, in preparation for a successful future. The services include:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Academic guidance:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Aims to help students learn independently by acquiring and refining the skills needed to succeed at university. Academic guidance focuses on providing students with training in study skills such as effective revision, time management, setting priorities and preparing for examinations, helping them overcome obstacles and difficulties and continue to progress towards successfully obtaining their degree.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Academic skills development programme:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
Aims to help students who are struggling in their studies, or who have high absence rates, to acquire the basic skills needed to overcome their difficulties and succeed. This programme was proposed for the 2016\u20132017 academic year, and some of its aspects were discussed during 2015\u20132016. It covers the following:<\/strong><\/h5>\n

    Identifying academic difficulties:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
      \n
    • \n
      Explaining the proposed concept of an "academic warning" and its consequences.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n
    • \n
      Drawing up a list of academic needs, encouraging students to identify the academic challenges they face, and discussing the factors that led to a decline in the student's cumulative average.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • \n
      Motivation and time-management skills:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
        \n
      • \n
        Explaining the importance of time management, goal-setting and priorities, drawing up a study schedule, and the plans needed to boost motivation and overcome procrastination.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • \n
        Making the most of lectures:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
          \n
        • \n
          Including effective skills for benefiting from classes, such as active listening, participation, positive note-taking and regular attendance.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • \n
          Effective learning skills:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            \n
          • \n
            Preparing for examinations and overcoming exam stress, including good preparation for examinations.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n
          • \n
            Discussing effective ways of handling the examination paper with minimal stress.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
            Individual psychological and social counseling:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Personal counseling helps students take responsibility for their lives, acquire the skills needed to adapt to the demands of university life, and overcome difficulties that prevent them from achieving their academic, professional and personal goals.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            It consists of a one-hour individual meeting with each student every week, addressing problems such as challenges related to growth and development, psychological stress or adjustment to the university environment. The length of the meeting varies from student to student depending on the nature of the problem, and the case is presented<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Group counseling:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Working with a small group of students who have similar difficulties and goals, or by class section, to address general or specific problems. This type of counseling encourages the exchange of positive experiences, empathy and support, and the development of coping and problem-solving skills.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Consultations and information:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            The Educational and Psychological Guidance Unit offers consultations on specific problems within its areas of expertise. In addition, the counselors are ready to consult with faculty and staff concerned about students facing difficulties. Consultations are offered in person or by telephone, and students can be referred to the appropriate specialist body when needed.<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Guidance programmes:<\/strong><\/h5>\n
            Awareness programmes are an integral part of the Educational Guidance Unit's work. They introduce the unit's duties and give students opportunities for training and benefit through an intensive awareness programme run each semester and covering several themes. Some programmes target particular groups, such as new students or prospective graduates, while others target all students. They are delivered on campus or in university housing several times during the academic year.<\/strong><\/h5>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
